Oratorio e Congregazione fino al 1870

Nel saggio si ripercorre la storia della costituzione dell’Oratorio da parte di Filippo Neri, risposta meditata e organica ai problemi di una società in trasformazione con cui fu possibile a fondere armonicamente le pratiche relative all’essere persone credenti e attive nel mondo. Valutate le caratteristiche di novità dell’Oratorio, viene presentato uno fra i suoi strumenti principali di azione, ovvero il sermone, nel quale si realizza la personalissima interpretazione filippina della cultura, che non deve ridursi a sterile esercizio intellettuale, ma va considerata e impiegata come strumento per orientarsi ad acquistare coscienza di sé. Si ripercorrono poi alcune delle tappe più importanti della storia della Congregazione: la prima fase a S. Girolamo della Carità, il trasferimento a S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini e quindi alla Chiesa Nuova, il consolidarsi delle due pratiche dette «oratorio di chiesa» e «oratorio piccolo», i mutamenti avvenuti dopo una cinquantina d’anni con la scomparsa degli uomini della prima stagione filippina, e infine il suo perdurare sostanzialmente invariato fino all’Ottocento.

Oratory and Congregation through 1870

The essay traces the history of the establishment of the Oratory by Philip Neri as a thoughtful and organic response to the problems of a changing society with which it was possible to harmoniously blend practices related to being persons of faith active in the world. The essay first assesses the Oratory’s novel characteristics and then passes to a consideration of one of its main instruments of action, namely the sermon, which presents a very personal Philippine interpretation of culture, namely, that it should not be reduced to a sterile intellectual exercise but considered and employed as a guiding tool in the acquisition of self-awareness. The essay subsequently traces some of the most important stages in the history of the congregation: the first phase at S. Girolamo della Carità, the move first to S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini and then to the Chiesa Nuova, the consolidation of the two practices known as «oratorio di chiesa» (church oratory) and «oratorio piccolo» (little oratory), the changes that took place after about fifty years with the disappearance of the men who had participated in the first Philippine season, and finally the congregation’s essentially unchanged continuation until the late nineteenth century.
