La tradizione della storiografia oratoriana. Tra passato e futuro

Il saggio intende analizzare sul lungo periodo la tradizione storiografica oratoriana, sviluppatasi a partire dall’intuizione originaria di Filippo Neri circa il ruolo della storia ai fini dell’evangelizzazione. Prendendo le mosse dal riconoscimento della storia quale elemento qualificante dell’apostolato oratoriano da parte di John Henry Newman, si rintraccia nella finalità edificante e nell’idea dell’Historia magistra sanctitatis l’anima profonda dell’ininterrotta attività storiografica degli Oratoriani. Si tratta, pertanto, di una vocazione culturale che dal ponderoso lavoro di Cesare Baronio ispira, pur nello sviluppo della metodologia storica, i suoi epigoni fino all’età contemporanea. In tal senso, l’impegno storiografico, appartenendo al carisma stesso dell’Istituto, si presenta come una missione inderogabile che gli Oratoriani sono chiamati nel presente e nel futuro a non disattendere.

The tradition of Oratorian historiography. Between past and future

The essay’s goal is to analyze over the long term the Oratorian historiographical tradition, which was born from the original intuition of Philip Neri regarding the role of history for purposes of evan- gelization. Taking its cue from John Henry Newman’s recognition of history as a distinctive element of the Oratorian apostolate, the contribution traces the profound soul of the uninterrupted historiographical activity of the Oratorians back to this edificatory intent and to the idea of Historia magistra sanctitatis. Historiography is, therefore, a cultural vocation that, moving forward from the massive works of Cesare Baronio and through the development of historical methodologies, continues to inspire its practitioners up to the present day. In this sense, the historiographical commitment can be understood as belonging to the very charism of the Institute, an imperative mission that the Oratorians are called to observe, in the present and into the future.
