Natalia, che da New York aveva trasmesso programmi radiofonici e notiziari a onde corte destinati all\u2019Italia per conto della NBC, arriv\u00f2 in citt\u00e0 nel giugno del 1944 con il grado di capitano dei Servizi Speciali del Psychological Warfare Branch (PWB) dell\u2019Office of War Information (OWI) e con l\u2019incarico di organizzare un ufficio di lettura e redigere regolari rapporti sui vari periodici pubblicati nella capitale. Lea, che aveva lavorato a Parigi per la Frick Art Reference Library di New York, fece ritorno a Roma poco prima dell\u2019occupazione nazista della capitale france- se. Nella seconda met\u00e0 del 1944 anche lei inizi\u00f2 a lavorare per il PWB dell\u2019OWI. Il loro sguardo sulla Citt\u00e0 Eterna \u2014 rintracciabile sia nei testi pubblicati che nella corrispondenza privata \u2014 non solo ne restituisce il profilo segnato dalla guerra, ma si sofferma anche sugli eventi e sui protagonisti della scena artistica e letteraria della capitale. Un panorama culturale a cui le due sorelle assicureranno il loro contributo, attraverso l\u2019agenzia teatrale Danesi Tolnay e il lavoro svolto da Natalia a New York per la casa editrice Mondadori e, successivamente, per la Rizzoli International Publishing Corporation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Rome in the wake of the Liberation in the writings of Natalia and Lea Danesi<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My essay aims to describe Rome in the months preceding and following its liberation from German occupation through the eyes of Natalia and Lea Danesi, the daughters of Roman journalist Ester Da- nesi Traversari. Having broadcast talk programmes and shortwave news to Italy for NBC from New York, Natalia arrived in Rome in June 1944 with the rank of captain in the Special Services of the Psychological Warfare Branch (PWB) of the Office of War Information (OWI). She was tasked with organising a Press Reading Bureau and compiling regular reports on the various periodicals published in the capital. Lea, who had worked in Paris for the Frick Art Reference Library of New York, returned to Rome shortly before the Nazis occupied the French capital. In the second half of 1944, she also started working for the PWB of the OWI. Their perspective on the Eternal City, evident in both their published writings and their private correspondence, offers a portrait of a city shaped by war and insight into the events and key figures of its artistic and literary milieu.
