This study critically analyses various media, such as films, photographs and ceremonies, but especially official publications, to investigate the mechanisms of Fascist propaganda. This propaganda transformed infrastructures and construction sites into emblems of an idealised and mythologised national grandeur. Particular emphasis is placed on Rome, the idealised capital and core of Mussolini’s political project. The city is presented as an ideological stage on which urban interventions, which are often contradictory and selective, are elevated to the status of symbols of power. Rather than merely documenting achievements, the celebratory publications fabricate an idealised and contrived image of the capital, portraying it as futuristic and consistent with the regime’s narrative of power and historical continuity. One of the propaganda strategies is the clear symbolic appropriation of projects begun under previous governments, which are claimed and ‘Fascistised’ despite the purported break with the ‘parliamentary’ past. The study aims to deconstruct this official rhetoric, revealing the representational strategies employed and the dissonance between the ‘narrated’ city and the reality of public works on the ground.

luglio 2025, pp. 28

[26
